Joe Pass.

Listen to "Virtuoso", "Unforgetable" or "One for My Baby." His work with in a duo format (guitar and tenor sax) on "Blues for Two" with Zoot Sims on tenor sax is unbelievable. Pass is like a band unto himself...

Carlos Santana without a doubt. Jimi is a little to messy and Clapton a little to formal in my viewpoint on the cross spectrum. Many other excellent players in between and out there for sure but I think it comes down to style in whatever they play. I like guitar players who, no matter how famous they are, don't act like guitar gods.

Well, technically, Herman Lee, obviously! But there's more 2 axeism than technique. When it comes2 musical talent, Steve Howe heads the field. Of the new generation, Matt Bellamy stars, but then he's a better pianist. The future? My nephew, Kellyn Levy, still a beginner, pairs the energy of Hanneman with the jazz mastery of Al DiMeola. Am I glad I gave him my equipment at 14!

MMMMM
Let me think...I would have to list Les Paul (the pioneer of the solid body electric guitar)without which none of the above listed folks would have made the list...ooo and the creator of sound on sound music better known as dubbing..he also created things like "licks",,"chording"..."trilling"...many fretting techniques...was an incredible jazz guitarist on top of that and with his wife Mary Ford sold millions of records...
I might have missed Chet Atkins listed if I did I apologize..Frank Zappa of course...Dickey Betts and to show my age Jorma KauKonen from the Jefferson Airplane which most of you are too young to remember...LOL..
I might also add that there are some absolutely trmendous "session" guitarists that have been left off this list as well...just a thought that they might be included too...
and I agree with Eric...Prince is an amazing guitarist...

someone i think is right up there with the greats of the past is: SeaSick Steve... not only is he a great player butt he makes several of his own guitars, encluding one made from a plank of wood called a diddly bow and another one made from old hubcaps off of a Morris Minor!!!

here he is playing with the legend John Paul Jones of led zeppelin..

In addition to all the axmen noted already:

Lowell George
Ry Cooder
Leo Kotke
Sonny Landreth
Albert Lee
Steve Cropper
Nels Cline
Trey Anastasio
Larry Carlton
Joe Messina
David Lindley
Dave Edmunds
Lee Ritenour
James Burton
Mark Knopfler
Bill Frisell
Michael Hedges

And since most all of the previous Guitar Gods mentioned in this topic studied, or were influenced by:

Robert Johnson
Jimmy Reed
Chuck Berry
Elmore James
Slim Harpo
Charlie Christian
Mississippi Fred McDowell
Reverend Gary Davis
Elizabeth Cotton
Andres Segovia
Mississippi John Hurt
T-Bone Walker

Although they're mostly recognized as brilliant songwriters, if you really listen to what they're doing, they're also great guitarists:

Paul Simon and James Taylor

Allow me to sing the praises of Joe Bonamassa, a blues/rock guitarist and vocalist. I first saw him play live when he was about 18 and a member of a band with a very interesting pedigree called Bloodline (google 'em). I recently caught him again as a 34-year-old solo artist. He was receiving standing ovations after almost every solo, sometimes two or three per song! I've been fortunate to see some of the all-time greats in concert: Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, Buddy Guy (twice), B.B. King, John McLaughlin (twice), Jimmy Page (twice), Carlos Santana (twice), Eddie Van Halen (thrice), Stevie Ray Vaughan, Frank Zappa, etc. I'm here to tell ya that Joe Bonamassa is easily one of the four or five best guitarists I've ever witnessed. Check out his LIVE FROM THE ROYAL ALBERT HALL concert on DVD and prepare to be amazed.
