I like to use the term "naked" over nude..
| For me personally it's simple... If I am talking in everyday conversation I use the word naked. I have always thought nude was a clinical term almost, for me personally anyway. What do you guys think? | |
| I agree naked is easy but I am a Yankee living in the south so I think it is Nekid here. LOL :) | |
| We live in the south and the correct erm is "Buck Ass Nekkid"! LOL | |
| I like naked over nude because it's easy and sounds more fun. | |
| Actually I am from Chicago originally. What we say up there is "S__t, is is too f____n cold here to be naked, I need to move to Florida so I can be Buck Ass Nekkid all year long! LOL | |
| NAKED...NAKED...NAKED! I guess you get the picture of what word I prefer! When my wife and I talk...we don't say..."let's go get nude today someplace...like the club or Terra Cotta." We always say..."let's go get naked." That usually means that we are in a social mode and want to spend some time with like minded NAKED people! Nude is a term we use when we talk with others about our lifestyle...such as..."we visit places where we can be nude." I think for many of those that don't get our lifestyle..."naked" has a sexy connotation and nude seems kinda...clinical! LOL | |
| I agree, naked is a great term. Whatever you wanna call it, naked, nekkid (I'm originally from the South - primarily Panama City, Florida, though we lived a few years when I was a youngster in Orlando, and my first year of life in Georgia), nude, naturist, let's just get outta those d--n clothes and be FREE. | Thanks for the post ColoradoGal. In a way that is what I was trying to get around to in my post but in just a more pc Washingtonian manner. We often use the word Nekkid in a comedic fashion here in the nudist park, but we all get it. I would probably do that in any social setting where everybody gets it. However, in a setting where you have the "don't get its" or "don't want to get its" I will usually use the term nude and even refer to myself as a nudist. I think we all need to be cognizant that we have NOT won the battle for acceptance of public nudity and nude living and we should all do what we can to help make that a reality. We are the examples the Textiles will look at and LISTEN to. ok, with all that said..... let's all get Nekkid and go Jump in the Hot Tub! SB | |
| LOL... Love to join you in the hot tub...it's raining like crazy, some thunder and lots of wind...here in Sunny Southern California! LOL So I guess me and the Prof will stay in today, stay naked and do some more painting! ;) | |
| It's the same in Michigan, but what a wonderful thought, jumping in a hot tub. It's thoughts like that and a tropical isle on my wallpaper that keep me going through the winter. lol | |
| Simple: I'm a nude when I'm naked. | |
| I've heard "nakie" used too, usually by little kids and it does have a nice innocent connotation about it. It's too bad we have to have so many words to describe the same thing...it's like Eskimos having a lot of words for 'snow' (although I understand that's not really true). | |
| I don't care much for "kiddie" type names and can't understand why a "nudist" is embarrassed or ashamed to use the words; Penis, vagina, pubic hair, pubic area, anus, rectum, butt...we all have them and one or the other of the first two listed! I've read numerous posts from "nudists" that will say..."below the belt", "down there," "nether regions..." come on...just use the words we expect our children to use when they are talking intelligently about their bodies. ;) Sorry to get off topic SB! :) | |

| Naked is one of those commoner English terms and nude is from those high faluten French invaders. Be an Anglo Saxon patriot and say NAKED. | |
| It does not matter to me what you call it as long as I am. | |
| Ya know... I think the word NAKED is bad for nudists. Cheri stated in another topic, "Being nude (not naked as naked has a vulnerability component) enables me to feel a bit healthier.". I totally agree with her. Yeah, we can laugh and kid using the naked word around other nudists like I did earlier in this thread but I think we forget when you talk to non-nudist your words speak for all nudists and we really should be more careful. We have no reason to put ourselves in a place of vulnerability so why do it. Words are powerful. Don't forget it. | |
| I was just on dictionary.com (9/14/12) and checked the meaning of both words. The end result is no real difference is given. We really don’t need to debate this issue. Both words have positive and negative images. The publisher of a paper my late wife worked for said English is a changing language and we need to accept those changes. So lets just relax and get undressed and enjoy the hot tub, swimming pool, the beach etc. | |
| Personally, I prefer "nude". Naked tends to convey shock (Oh My Gawd! He's NAKED!) or shame (At that moment their eyes were opened, and they suddenly felt shame at their nakedness. So they sewed fig leaves together to cover themselves. -Genesis 3:7 NLT Bible). Nude makes me think of a mindset and a lifestyle. I am a nudist. I am nude as often as possible. *shrug* To each his own. My .05 worth. | |
| Wayne, I don't need to relax and I think you missed the point of EVERYTHING I said. This is NOT about dictionary meanings... it is about perceptions. The word Naked has a negative connotation when applied to what nudists strive for and enjoy. I don't just wander around the woods naked like some lunatic when I go for a nude hike. People who do not understand or appreciate social nudity would probably view as exactly doing that and being that. Wayne, I think you need to get some sun and stop relaxing naked in your house. Lacey, agree with you up to the point "to each is own" because what they do could very well impact me, especally when they are clueless and speak with ignorant bias. If we become complacent in what we say and do, social nudity will have a difficult time getting a toehold with the textiles. | |
| I use nude. Nude simply means uncovered. Naked can mean unprotected or raw. I.e. "Naked Aggression." I am often nude, but never naked. | |
| This topic can go on for ever. My point is that both words can have positive and negative. One expression I cam across was the winds in winder the trees are naked to the wind. I doubt that the trees have shame. On the other hand there are strippers and what they do is referred to as nude dancing. So it really doesn’t matter what word you use someone is going to interpret the way they choose. I did not mean that SB you needed to relax. Isn’t relaxing (de stressing) what we do as naturalist? | |
| I AM A NUDIST!! And I use both terms at different times. AM I wrong for using either of them?? I really dont think so!! I do feel that "nude" is better than "naked" at times, but to each his own as to what term you choose to use!! After all, If you are nude, are you not naked too?? | |
| I usually use the term nude but also will use the term naked when speaking or chatting on-line with other nudists. I have also used the term naturalist when it seemed to fit. However, i refer to myself as a nudist. I think even the unitiated pretty well understand what it means if I tell them I'm a nudist. Jim | |
| Nude is a static state of being most often used in the art world. Naked is a live active form. The following statement illustrates the difference; The statue of The David is a nude. The model was naked when he posed for it. | |
| Naked is an interesting word. What makes it interesting is that, depending on the context in which it is used, it can convey entirely different feelings. If you read about abusive situations where nudity is forced, the words "stripped naked' or "completely naked" are often used to convey a feeling of vulnerability and helplesness. On the other hand, naked can also be used to convey feelings of empowerment, raw honesty and freedom, hence the title of the book: "Naked and Unashamed"; or the documentary "Naked on the inside." And then in a sexual context, the word naked takes on yet a different meaning: "He/she stripped naked right in front of me" immediately brings sexual images to most people's minds. And then you have what jetman abov me described: naked as a dynamic state of being, and nude as a static state. In other words, the word naked is pretty much what people make of it, given the context in which it is used. So I have used both terms interchangeably, depending on the nature of the conversation, the listener and the feeling I was trying to convey. I would also add that as a nudist kid, my daughter never used the term nude. It was always naked. "Naked fun", "naked with Mom and Dad", "playing naked." As adults we load the term with a bunch of baggage. Food for thought.. | |
| Personally I don't like the term "clothing optional". Nude or naked for me! |
