USA Nudists vs. European Nudists re: body adornment
| When I see pictures of nudists (usually on the beach)from Europen countries (or even meet them in person) verses nudists in the USA there appears to be a distinct difference in the amount of body adornment. USA nudists appear to have much more body adornment, tattoos and jewerly, as compared to Europeans who appear more natural and have minimal if any tattoos or jewerly. Any thoughts on this? Have you noticed it? What does it mean? Is it true or just a misperception? (By the way, I changed some of the original wording in this topic because I used the word "obsessed" and that is a jugemental word which was not my intention, sorry if I offended anyone by that word. | I think we, the US, are trend setters for some fashion statements and I think body adornment, that you are commenting on, is a fashion trend we lead the world in. I've even seen some places that are behind the fashion trend times by several months or longer than a year. We have friends that have teenage daughters and live in the mid-west and they are starting to do things there that the kids out here have already done and move on to something else...so I think this has to do with some of those that are in the "limelight", magazines, newspapers, TV, Movies...where the younger generation copies what they are doing. Just guessin' actually...our kids are in the mid 30's...so we've been out of that loop for a while! LOL Grandchildren are approaching pre-teen ages! YIKES! | |
| FireProf, Having been in the Air Force for 24 years, living overseas and various places in the U.S., I'd say California tends to be THE trendsetter for a lot of things - fashion, social mores, politics, lifestyles, etc. Look out for those preteen grandchildren. You'll probably be pulling your hair out at some point, wondering whatever happened to the younger generation. But, of course, you'll get to watch your kids go through what you and the Prof experienced when raising them. But, in the end, it'll turn out okay. Jim | |
| SB... I was looking though some of the posts on the home page and saw a post from a member over on the Tattooed Nudist group and she posted your question on this topic and her email/PM response to you on that group. I know she's probably reading and I'd probably join that group and chime in there but to join another group...just too much time being spent on the computer already. So since she's probably reading...I'd like to respond to her here. .................................................................. Hi Tattooed friends. There was a post on Absolute Naturists Group regarding tattoos that I sent the moderator a message on. Following is the comment and then my response: POST AS FOLLOWS' "When I see pictures of nudists (usually on the beach)from Europen countries (or even meet them in person) verses nudists in the USA there appears to be a distinct difference in the amount of body adornment. USA types almost seem almost seem obsessed with adornment, tattoos and jewerly, whereas Europeans are more natural and have minimal if any tattoos or jewerly. Any thoughts on this? Have you noticed it? What does it mean? Is it true or just a misperception?" HERE IS MY RESPONSE: Premium Member Olivia Feb 24, 2011 Hi Sun, I am not a member of the Absolute Naturist, but want to comment on your post there about tattoos and body art. Americans are NOT some kind of trend setters. Actually Americans have copied worldwide tribal and cultural traditions that go back generations and are indicative of familial ties, social status, rights of passage and personal history. My tattoos are such; therefore I do not consider them "not natural". Feel free to post this as I hope it will help with education and acceptance for those of us that chose to express ourselves this way. -Olivia .................................................................... Olivia, I've responded to your posts over on the AANR message board and thought I should respond to you here as well because I was the one that posted the "trend/fashion trend" idea as an opinion only. I think what you have to realize in my opinion is that many of the people I've come in contact with, young and older, don't really have the same reasons for getting tattoos as you have. It's obvious that your tat or tattoos mean more to you than just fashion. Many on the Tattooed Nudes group have also stated that there are specific reasons for their tattoos and they are not just about fashion or a trend...but that's not ALL nudists or non nudists reason for getting a tattoos or numerous tattoos. I hope you don't take offense when we just offer our opinion or our take on what may or may not be the reason...we are just having conversation and though we, personally, don't speak for everyone here...I think the same goes that not everyone with a tattoo has done so purely for philosophical, spiritual, rights of passage reasons and personal history but many DO just do it for fashion. Peace! Sorry you had a bothersome person nag you in the hot tub/sauna. And...for the record...I like tat's and piercings but don't have either. My wife isn't against them but won't do it. Because she won't do it...she prefers I do not as well. Since I really have no reason, other than fashion, to do it...I opt to keep her happy. FP :) | |
| Olivia: Slow down girlfriend.... I post topics for opinions, thoughts and conversation, Not Judgement. This post is an observation only, not about trends or anything like that. What people want to do is up to them and their own personal choice and I totally respect that. More honey and less vinegar makes the world a sweeter place. I appreciate you reading AN posts and welcome you to join Absolute Naturists if you are so inclined. SB | |
| My best friends are European. They don't even think of themselves as nudist or non nudist. They have always gone nude when they do to the beach or out for sunning so they prefer to go to nudist resorts for vacations. When they need to wear clothes, they do. They are very natural and always have little or no body adornment. Like I said, they don't consider themselves nudist or non-nudists even though they prefer to be nude....They just consider themselves people. What I am trying to poorly explain is, it is natural for them. | |
| I agree with nudist1..my european friends never seem to compartmentalize themselves as this or that...nudist or textiled...they jsut seem themselves as "people"...it seems that we in American have this driving penchant to segment everything including people to the point of hypenation people into groups..awww he/she is a nudist sooo certainly they can nto be anything else..tattos have been around forever...from my standpoint they look terrific on young toned bodies and tend to heighten an older persons age and they loose that mscle toneness and sag..jewelerey??? here again Americans seem to go to almost any lengths to throw on some silver or gold trinket supposedly to "enhance" their appearence.. | |
| It does seem Americans, more than anyone else, feel the need to attach labels to everything. Also, we (as a people) seem far more concerned with nudity than any other nationalities. I guess it goes back to the Puritan founders of this great nation. Let's lose the labels and the prudishness and just enjoy being people, nude or not. Jim | |
| I am not anti-tattoo or anti-jewelry, I accept them, I just don't understand them. I could never understand why some people feel that they must mutilate themselves in order to feel good about themselves. | |
| I think its all good. I enjoy seeing the way people express themselves. I also enjoy the stories & reasons behind peoples Tat & piercing. I am all natural except for my ears being pierced & shaving. I did set limits on my son when he was growing up that he could dye & or cut his hair any way he liked but he had to wait till after he was 18 to tat or pierce himself. I also made him wait to get a driver license. He still has niether while his friends have many body adornments. It seems very popular with the young kids these days. I try to be open minded & hope others can be open minded with me. I find far more acceptance among Nudist/ Naturists than at any other textile beach thats for sure. | |
| To Olivia: I say go Girl! Conversation and discussion are great unless it is suggested that someone shouldn't be offended by what is being discussed. Many of us have seen the unpleasant comments in the Bulletin on this subject. I encourage everybody to speak up for themselves. Americans, even American nudists, seem to be obsessed with what other people are wearing.I don't want to tell other people what they should or shouldn't wear or how they shouldn't shouldn't adorn themselves. I don't want to convert others to nudism. I wish the matter of personal appearance was a non-issue. |
