I was thinking about the "nude in inclement weather post I made earlier", when I started thinking about times when, for some reason or another, you just have to grab something to cover up. Right off the bat, i just want to say that my post is not about nude vs CO, or who is the better nudist, or whether people should be nude or stay home. My post is about clothing-mindfulness.
I thought back to this picture of the iconic Diane Webber. Please note also that my question is gender neutral and is not just another shot at women. I just happened to remember these DW shots. Anyway, here goes:

Looking at the way she is wearing her T-shirt, which is perhaps unusual, one may logically deduce that what she is doing is trying to cover her shoulders/upper back - perhaps from baking. Since that is all she is trying to cover, she has minimized the T-shirt to its essential function: shoulder/upper back coverage.
Some might say that the knot over her breasts is prurient; I say it is sensible. Why would she cover anything other than the areas where exposed skin is unconfortable to her?
My question is: when/if you do require coverage, are you mindful about where and how much coverage you need? Or do you just grab the nearest oversized T-shirt, or sarong, or pair of pants out of reflex?

I don't cover at all ... unless I'm cold. But my wife will cover when she feels she's had too much sun and in which case ... she'll grab one of her SunPrecaution shirts and puts that on.
If her legs have had enough sun, she'll usually place a sarong over them til the sun goes down then it all comes off again.
;)
D. Weber's t shirt fashion is most likely as you stated, to cover her shoulders and upper back from too much sun exposure but she wanted her breasts exposed so ... that's how she made that happen.
Neat idea ... but she was a true trailblazer for this lifestyle.

I too think the manner in which the t-shirt was tied was just for practicality.
FireProf, you've mentioned your wife's practical use of clothing numerous times - because she wanted to ward off a chill or to protect herself from the sun's intensity when it became too much.
There is no reason we should to try to judge who is the better nudist. We all should be free to expose or cover as much as is practical in a given situation. I too prefer full nudity as long as I'm comfortable. I have spent winter evenings covered only with a Snuggie or blanket while pleaantly nude underneath. In the intense Las Vegas summer sun simple shade may be enough to reduce the discomfort of the sun if I can no longer withstand the burn on my skin.

I think the way she used her t-shirt is simply sensible. I sometimes put my towel wrap around my neck like a cape to shield my shoulders from the sun.

|
I have a back brace that I may have to wear when my scoliosis acts up and my back hurts.

In the past, I have seen t-shirts custom cut by the wearer to cover the back and shoulders, and keep the front more or less open to the sun.

Black Fly Season in the Northwoods. Even a hot and muggy night with temps in the 70's made me fully dress at C/O places...and when I say "fully clothed" I mean FULLY. L/S Shirt, Pants, Socks. I hated it. It was so hot but the options were either get eaten or cover myself.

Depends where I am certain time of the year sand flies are very bad to point only way to stop being attacked is be fully clothed - mozzies are also a nuisance after sunset esp near lakes and some rivers.

Have any of you ever heard of "nude intelligent"?
It simply means, IF you are burning up in a certain place... cover up -or- IF you are getting eaten up or bit in a certain place... cover up -or IF you are freezing in a certain place... cover up and so forth and so forth. I do it, it only makes sense. In TX we have No-Seeums when the wind is not blowing and they bite. In WA we have mosquitos and they bite, at Lake Powell in the summer they have Sun that will fry a dozen eggs at the same time not to mention your body. Been there and done all that. Guess what, I cover up.
This is not the same as covering up to for the sake of covering your nudity which I don't do.

Of course ... I've heard of nude intellegence ... but there are some that think that you MUST be nude at all times, at all cost ... and some of these idiots manage clubs, resorts and unlease their clothes nazi's on the likes of those we've commented on.
At our club, we'd love to sit around the pool on the pool deck but after several hours of reflective sun off the pool my wife, having already had pre cancer spots removed, will put her SunPrecautions shirt on and these clothes nazi's come out of the woodwork like roaches!
There is little common sense with some of the people that ironically ... patrol the pool deck looking for those covering up and they do so ... completely dressed!

I'm sure everyone here does practice nude intelligence even though it may come across in one's writing that the individual doesn't. Nude intelligence is the reason I'm in such good health. For me, there's been no colds or missed workdays in a very long time due to it. There were lots of nights this past winter where the robe was worn even with the heat on. And this is Florida! Although I prefer to sleep without covers during the non-winter months, until June I usually ended up under the comforter. When at the beach and not using my umbrella, a hat is affixed to my bald head to protect it from the sun. Thus, the irony of being nude yet wearing a clothing attire. Nude intelligence is the paradox of living to be clothes-free but accepting that one can never really live without clothes. Clothes may take away your nudity, but it doesn't take away your nudism. Comfort wins in the end!

I really like "Clothes may take away your nudity, but it doesn't take away your nudism" from Bauhausnude! Nudism intelligence is using clothes when you need them (protection from external elements like sun, cold, insects, tools...).
Being nude is about well-being. And to preserve this well-being you sometimes need some cover. I tend to think we "over engineer" this kind of questions and do not go back to the essence of "being well".
In a nudist setting, I expect people to be nude, but respect people who are not totally nude, as long as they respect me being nude. Of course if a person if covered everyday or fully dressed all day in a nudist setting, there is a problem, but if it's temporary, then I do not see any issue.

I also really like the "Clothes may take away your nudity, but it doesn't take away your nudism". I believe it makes the point that nudism isn't just about being nude.
