Is the doubling of words using "nudist" a positive or negative for social nudity and if it is going to be done where should the emphais be (i.e. Nudist-Chicken or Chicken-Nudist)?
In another topic the doubling up of words was mentioned like nudist-swinger or gay-nudist or nudist-biker, so forth and so forth. On the surface it would appear that the word nudist is being used to gain attention for marketing or justify a behavior choice. Maybe yes, maybe no. Good, bad, neither, hmmm.
It's a good question, what do you think?

I am a nudist, primarily home nudist, but would be my only "nudist" designation.

People who add other designations, particularly sexual designations (swinger, gay, whatever) tend to be more the other, and less nudist, IMNSHO. When they denote something construed as sexual into it, they show they don't understand what nudism is about.

I don't care if you're a swinger, gay, poly, because 1) I didn't ask, and 2) I'm not going to participate.

They probably think that by adding the word "nudist", they'll be more accepted on nudist sites. Little do they realize, those who are truly nudists, view them with more skepticism.

It's bad enough that people already have the misconception that all we do is frolic naked and have wanton, indiscriminate sex, without someone calling themselves a "nudist-swinger".

I'll agree with Lacey. The nudist-something, to me indicates "I like being naked" and "I tend to like to do this thing while naked". So a nudist-hiker would be someone who likes being naked while hiking. They may be naked at home, or visit clubs, too, but primarily they enjoy practicing their nudism while hiking.

Now when you get into the nudist-(something sexual, swinger, gay, etc.) you get into trouble because nudism is non-sexual social nudity. So you can't enjoy non-sexual social nudity while having sex. Now you could like having sex sometimes, and like sitting around a pool with no clothes on sometimes, but you can't do both at the same time.

I would say there are people who don't make the distinction. They are open with their sexuality and sitting around the pool naked is sexy and having sex is sexy and they don't need to separate the two - and they may not recognize or respect the need for other nudists to keep the sexual and non-sexual divided.

I don't have a problem with nudist-something in general. It helps people identify and declare their special interests and find others of like interests. _I_ don't feel divided by it. I suppose there are those who do, or who want to set up som hierarchy of nudist-whatever. Nudist-always > nudist-resort > nudist-home. I don't have time for that.

I think we should make a distinction between sexual and non sexual activities/choice/behavior. Nudism, in the AANR view and I believe of most of us here, relates to social nudism, without any sexual connotation. So adding a sexual activity/choice/behavior after or before the word nudism is somehow an oxymoron. Now hiking, biking, swimming, etc. is an activity you can chose to do nude and that you can socially share, staying in our definition of nudism.

So to close I am OK to be a nudist-hiker or a hiker-nudist. However, I disagree with the usage of a sexual behavior/choice along with nudism.

Regarding the doubling up of words, I think we're so accustomed to being marketed to or analyzed we do it to ourselves automatically. Hardly anyone identifies themselves as "American" but rather as a "fill in the blank ethnic heritage - American". Then people go on to sub-group themselves further (e.g. "I'm a PTA mom"; "I'm a gear head"; "I'm an XYZ alumni"; etc. etc.). It's almost a given that nudists (a sub-group) would go on to further refine their sub-classification.

As concerns the chicken-egg question, I think which word you put first determines your value proposition. That is, the word you put first is the thing you value more. The hiker-nudist is more interested in the hiking than the nudism. It might be a close call for some but what you put first is the thing that's most important.

In some ways, I don't mind nudists or anyone else hyphenating themselves. At least it gives you a way to find kindred souls. Yet in other ways, it bothers me. It sets up automatic walls because you aren't part of their sub-group club. I guess mostly I'm not crazy about people automatically declaring they're a hyphenated somethin-somethin. It's like volunteering to live in a self-imposed ghetto.
Me, I'm a nudist period. I enjoy doing everything, including sex, while nude but I'm certainly NOT a sexually active nudist in a public sense of any sort and don't feel the need to define myself further.

However, I'm okay with others who do identify themselves as hyphenated nudists as long as it does not involve sexual connotations.

But, SunBunny, nudist-chicken does sound like someone who's afraid to openly identify themselves as a nudist.

I guess doubling the words with nudist can be a good thing, if your looking "specifically" for others that enjoy doing things "naked" as you do ... such as nudist hiker, nudist snorkler, nudist diver, nudist boater, nudist runner, nudist biker ...

I'm just a plain ol' nudist nudist! I try and do everything and anything I can nude but sometimes just can't. I happen to be a nudist that likes to run, boat, bike, hike, swim, snorkle, dive, drive, sun, travel, camp ... so I'm not going to call myself one or the other because I like being naked no matter what.

I've read many a story of some that may not be naked at home, visit clubs or resorts but occasionally only the beaches, woods and hiking trails. I don't even know if they consider themselves nudists or naturists ... just that they prefer doing that specific activity in the nude, such as hiking.

For me ... Nudist - Egg came first. Born naked and after being forced to wear clothes for several years ... took it upon myself to return to my roots!

I am definitely a nudist only; first, last, and only. The only times I feel it necessary to dress would be to go into Columbia for whatever reason or at least partially cover up to go to the mailbox.

I think the first word relates to whom you really feel closer to. I am a Jewish Nudist, a Jewish social and private nudist and naturist.
An interesting topic. How about using the term nude when it has nothing to do with clothing or people, but rather as an attention grabber in advertising. Every city around California seems to have a "NUDE Furniture" store, that is furniture that has not been finished with paint or stain and varnish.
