I was surprised to hear this, but not entirely. The Republican Party is growing increasingly right-wing, and Specter didn't like it. Now, if only we can get the Minnesota situation over with and get Al Franken into the Senate.

If Specter (one of my Senators) REALLY wanted to do something radical he would have pulled a Jim Jeffords and gone Indie. Nope...instead he joins the DNC. Same suit...different color. Had he done that he would have had to win a three-way race the next time he runs for re-election. That means he would have to debate and campaign. Specter is a lazy old fart who wants to take the path of least resistance in order to maintain HIS status. He knows he'd get kicked in the pants by the next GOP candidate in the primary (PA has closed primaries) but he knows he can muster enough support from his Philly base and from NEPA to take the Democratic nomination. I might register as a Democrat just to vote against him.

The sad part is I used to have a lot of respect for him because he was a moderate voice in the GOP and wasn't above crossing party lines. Now I just think he's a self-serving schmuck who's time has passed.
I can understand why Spector changed parties. The Republican party has become agenda oriented meaning the leadership dictates how its members should vote. I always thought that Political parties had a general philosophy of what they stood for but not requiring every one to vote the same way. If so they we could same a lot of money by having proxy government. Meaning in the election we would vote Dem. or Reb. and all votes for 2 years would be bases on that vote. So if there was 235 in 1 party and 200 in the other party all votes would be those numbers. Of course I am being sarcastic.
